Poogan's Porch

The house

The house at 72 Queen Street was built in 1888. Zoe St. Amand lived here with her sister; after the house was sold and converted, diners and neighbors began to see a woman in a window, still looking for the sister who had been moved to a nursing home. She is the one in the photographs that were not supposed to have a woman in them. The restaurant is named for Poogan, a stray who claimed the porch when the restaurant opened in 1976 and is buried in the front garden. Guests still feel a dog pass under the table. The shrimp and grits are very good. The porch is the correct table.
