Farnsworth House Inn

The house

Built around 1810, the Farnsworth sat on the line in July 1863. Confederate sharpshooters fired from the house; more than a hundred bullet scars remain in the south wall. Men died in and around these rooms. The dining cellar is where guests now eat, and where staff still report soldiers who did not stack arms: a man at the far table, a presence on the stairs, Mary the maid who never clocked out. Gettysburg has no shortage of paid haunt tours. This is a working inn that feeds you in a room that was a fighting position. The difference is the plate.

Eat in the cellar. Order whatever they are doing that would have made sense in 1863 — stew, pie, bread that can survive a siege. Then look at the wall on your way out.
