The house
Deer Path Inn opened in 1929 as a half-timbered English inn on the North Shore. It is a living hotel with public dining — one of the few Lake Forest rooms where you can eat in a house that old without a country-club card. The haunt is gentler than the Red Lion’s: innkeeper memory, a building that has seen a century of Gold Coast weekends. Elk Grove is a straight shot south. Come for supper. Stay if you want the upstairs chapter.
North Shore dining, not a burger dive. Dress for Illinois Road. If you take a room, you are no longer just a diner.
