The house

Coq d’Or opened in 1933 in The Drake, the Gold Coast hotel that still behaves like a private house. The Lady in Red is the name attached to a New Year’s Eve: a woman in scarlet who found her husband with someone else and went out a tenth-floor window. The parents of Bobby Franks, murdered in 1924, lived here afterward. The lounge is walnut, gold, and public. You do not need a keycard to drink where the hotel’s dead still prefer the bar to the lake.

A serious cocktail. Order food if the kitchen is up. This is not a dive. Sit as if the Lady might still walk through looking for a husband who is not there.
