The house

The restaurant occupies a 1767 carriage house on Barrow Street long associated with Aaron Burr. Whether Burr’s ghost is a convenient famous name or an actual tenant, the reports from floor staff are specific: champagne flutes that leave the table, candles that light after they have been pinched, a woman in black on the stairs, a tall man in period coat caught in the mirrors. It is also, inconveniently for skeptics, one of the more beautiful dining rooms in the Village, famous for beef Wellington and proposals. The haunting and the romance share a room. That is New York. You dress for one and may get the other.

Beef Wellington is not optional here. It is the house. Order champagne anyway. If a flute travels, you have the rarest pairing in Manhattan.
