Hotel Baker
The house
Hotel Baker opened in 1928 on the Fox River in downtown St. Charles — limestone, a rose garden, the Crown Jewel of the Fox. The story the house carries is a chambermaid jilted at the altar, or after a poker night, who drowned herself in the river. The old maids’ quarters became the sixth-floor penthouse. Guests still report voices and bedding pulled by nothing visible. Rox is the public martini lounge. You can drink on the river without booking the maid’s old floor. Fox River suburbs do not need a downtown ticket.
A martini at Rox. Look at the river. If you take a room, ask about six. The kitchen and lounge are the living house; the penthouse is the one that still employs her.
