The house

The Myrtles is a 1796 house on the old Spanish Trail, famous for a legend that should be handled carefully: Chloe, an enslaved woman, is said to have poisoned a birthday cake, killing children of the Clarke family, and to appear still in a green turban. Historians dispute parts of the tale; visitors and staff have not stopped reporting a woman on the gallery, children at play with no children in residence, and a mirror that holds handprints no living guest made. The Carriage House restaurant on the grounds is public dining. You can eat Southern food a few steps from one of the most published hauntings in the country, then decide how much of the story you need to be true.

Eat at the Carriage House, then walk the gallery before dark. The kitchen is plantation-Southern, not a gimmick. The house does its own work.
