The house

The DeSoto House opened in 1855 on Galena’s Main Street. Lincoln spoke from the balcony. Grant kept rooms. Fires and explosions failed to finish the house. The Lady in Black is the ghost the hotel still names; Ghost City Tours notes her mystery was not solved until 2011. Generals’ Restaurant is the downstairs dining room, public, brick, beams. You can eat without taking a key. Galena calls itself one of Illinois’s most haunted towns. This is the table that argument starts at.

Dinner downstairs. Walk Main after. If you take a room, you are no longer just a diner — you are a guest of a house that has already outlived its first century of presidents.
