The house

The Chop House occupies an 1897 Victorian brownstone, once a private home of the Minier family. Food Network named it Illinois’s most haunted restaurant, and the staff do not treat that as a marketing line. Florence, a woman in period dress, is still reported on the stairs. A child cries in rooms that have no children. Wine glasses leave the bar and find the floor without a hand to help them. Sightings run all day, but the third floor after dark is where the house is most awake. Come as a diner. The brownstone does not need an appointment to notice you.

Order the Chicago-cut and sit upstairs if you can. The beef is the reason to go; the third floor is the reason you might stay later than the check.
